Heath Lambert Treaty Solutions team provides support and advice to clients in the area of Kidnap and Ransom (K&R) insurance.

K&R policies protect personal and corporate assets against financial loss arising from the payment of a ransom or certain other contingencies.

The payment of large ransoms for the release of loved ones or business associates can cause both families and businesses to suffer serious financial difficulties without this protection.

Items generally covered by a K&R policy include:

• The amount surrendered as ransom. Ransom means either the cash surrendered to pay a ransom or in the case of marketable goods or services the actual cash value at the time of surrender.
  
• Loss in transit of the ransom whilst it is being conveyed to the kidnappers by the authorised messenger.
  
• Fees and expenses of the response team.

Additional costs, which may arise as a result of kidnap and ransom include:

• Fees and expenses for authorised independent negotiators.
  
• Costs of travel and accommodation for the policyholder/insured person.
  
• Fees for medical and/or psychiatric care for a period following the release of the insured person.
  
• Fees for independent legal advice incurred during a given period following the release of the insured person.
  
• Informant rewards (leading to the arrest and conviction of the extortionists).
  
• Cost of communication, recording equipment and advertising costs.
  
• Personal accident (loss of limb/extremity/senses i.e. sight or hearing, permanent total disablement or death) occurring as a direct result of a kidnap or an attempted kidnap or within a given period thereafter.
